A taste of what you’ll do
The Regulatory Counsel is a mid-level role within the Regulatory function, responsible for providing independent regulatory advice and analysis to the business across multiple gambling jurisdictions.
The Regulatory Counsel takes ownership of a defined portfolio of regulatory matters, providing clear and practical advice on the application of gambling laws, licence conditions, and regulatory requirements.
The role involves independent management of licensing and regulatory submissions, proactive identification of regulatory risks, and substantive input into the development of policies, frameworks, and business initiatives. The Regulatory Counsel will develop relationships with internal stakeholders and regulators, contributing meaningfully to the delivery of the team’s objectives.
Accountabilities:
Regulatory Advisory & Interpretation
- Monitor, analyse and interpret regulatory developments across multiple gambling jurisdictions, assessing their impact on the business.
- Provide clear, practical, and independent regulatory advice to internal stakeholders across product, marketing, payments, operations, and technology.
- Conduct substantive legal research and regulatory analysis on applicable laws, licence conditions, and regulatory frameworks.
- Manage regulatory queries from the business, providing timely and well-reasoned responses with limited supervision.
- Provide regulatory input on customer-facing terms and conditions, complaints, and related matters.
- Identify and escalate novel, complex, or high-risk regulatory issues to the Senior Regulatory Counsel as appropriate.
Regulatory Strategy & Business Enablement
- Lead regulatory impact assessments in connection with new products, features, market entries, and strategic initiatives.
- Identify, assess, and advise on regulatory risks, contributing to risk assessments and mitigation strategies.
- Drive cross-functional engagement to support the embedding of regulatory requirements across the business.
- Provide substantive regulatory guidance on AML/CFT, sanctions, responsible gambling, data protection, and other key regulatory areas.
- Support the Senior Regulatory Counsel in providing regulatory input into the business’s strategic planning and commercial activities.
Licensing & Regulatory Operations
- Manage the preparation, submission, and ongoing maintenance of gaming licence applications across multiple jurisdictions, taking ownership of assigned portfolios.
- Oversee and ensure compliance with regulatory reporting obligations, including timely and accurate submissions to licensing authorities.
- Maintain and develop regulatory registers, licences, approvals, and associated documentation.
- Manage and develop relationships with regulators and competent authorities, escalating significant regulatory interactions to the Senior Regulatory Counsel.
- Prepare and coordinate responses to regulatory inquiries, inspections, enforcement actions, and information requests.
Regulatory Framework & Policy Development
- Assist in the development and maintenance of assigned regulatory policies, standards, and frameworks, ensuring alignment with applicable laws and licence conditions.
- Provide substantive regulatory input into AML, responsible gambling, consumer protection, and other regulatory policy areas.
- Develop and deliver regulatory training and awareness materials to Compliance and operational teams.
- Identify gaps in existing policies and frameworks and propose improvements proactively.
Governance, Assurance & Collaboration
- Provide meaningful regulatory input into compliance monitoring activities, internal reviews, and audit processes.
- Collaborate closely with Legal, Compliance, Risk, Technology, and operational teams to ensure consistent interpretation and application of regulatory requirements across the business.
- Lead or contribute to regulatory workstreams within internal projects, change program, and cross-functional initiatives.
- Support junior members of the Regulatory team, providing guidance and reviewing their work where required.
Documentation & General
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date regulatory documentation, records, and internal registers.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Regulatory function’s processes and ways of working.
- Perform other duties reasonably aligned with the role.
Qualifications
- Qualified lawyer with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law (LLB or equivalent).
Required Skills
- 3–4 years post-qualification experience in regulatory, legal, or advisory roles, ideally within iGaming, fintech, financial services, or other regulated industries.
- Demonstrated experience in multi-jurisdictional gambling regulation and licensing, including the preparation and management of licence applications and regulatory submissions.
- Experience providing independent regulatory advice to internal business stakeholders.
- Exposure to AML/CFT, responsible gambling, and consumer protection regulatory requirements is required.
- Strong legal research, analysis, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and address regulatory issues independently.
- Ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements and translate them into clear, practical, and commercially sound advice.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present regulatory analysis to non-legal audiences.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a varied and demanding workload, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and attention to detail.
- Fluency in English is required; proficiency in an additional language (Danish, Finnish, or Swedish) is advantageous.
